Hi everyone,

I'm excited to be the new teacher of Room 14. Thank you to Mrs Te Whaiti for all her help in the hand over.
It was good to meet many of the class parents at the recent student led conferences. I was really impressed with the confident way the children shared their learning with their parents. I look forward to the rest of the year.

Are We Ready?

In Room 14 we are investigating if we are ready for an emergency, that would mean we would have to stay at school over night.
Firstly we got into groups and discussed what was essential and what wasnt. We came up with four things.
Food
First Aid Kits
Toilets/toilet paper
Water

Food
We looked around the school for food. We found the freezer. We counted 4 loaves of bread with 20 slices in each. That means there were 80 slices of bread. This is not enough to feed the whole school.

First Aid Kits
There are 3 big First Aid Kits in the school. They are all in the office. We do not have access to these if we are in a lockdown.

Toilets
There are 400 sheets in each toilet roll. There are 350 rolls of toilet paper stored in the school. This is enough to cater for the whole school.

Water
We went searching around the school and we found a pile of boxes. 6 across and 4 high. This means there are 24 boxes.
We opened the boxes and saw there were 4 bottles down and 6 bottles across. So 24 bottles in each box.

We needed the total amount of bottles. So we needed to add 24 boxes of 24 bottles.
We used a lot of different strategies.
Doubles
Multiplication facts
Rounding
Partitioning
There were 576 bottles

There are 468 students
45 staff
That totals 513

That means there is enough water for 1 bottle per person with 63 left over.

On the side of the box we discovered a sign that said 'Expires Feb 2013'
We didnt think we were able to drink this water so we researched if we could. It turns out we can. It may not taste as good but it is still okay to drink.
We think we have enough water to last one night.

We emailled Mr Bremer and invited him to discuss the situation.

Mr Bremer came into our class to discuss the situation. 

As a class we thought there should be 1 first aid kit between 2 classes.

Firstly he discussed first aid kits

Mr Bremer disagreed that we need more, he thinks 3 is enough.

Secondly we discussed the food situation. We thought each child should bring a lunchbox with dried or canned food that was named and stored in the classroom. This would be sent home at the end of the year if not used.

Mr Bremer thought this was not necessary because we have a lot of milk in the school. Some of us were concerned about the people who can not have milk. Mr Bremer said "they would have to have water".

These choices are based on the fact that our school is placed right next to the Civil Defence Headquarters.

Basketball Games

Today we did games with our basketball coach - Clifton. He taught us two games. One was called the 'Number Game' and the other one was called 'Golden Child'. 

We were practicing dribbling, shooting, passing, ball control, pivot, slide defence and team work. 

For our warm up we had to do knee high running. We did grapevine and bottom kicks. This was our 4th session and we have improved so much!

Zoe's Holiday

 Here is a turtle that I saw when I went diving at Home Bay in the Coromandel.

 This is an octopus that was in a hole. It used its tenticles to try and grab my dads camera.

These are some crayfish that are huddled up under a rock. I also got to see lots of kina and yellow tailed fish. We tried to catch some so we could use them for bait to catch some big fish.

Basketball

In Room 14 we have been doing basketball practice with a basketball coach called Clifton.

He has been teaching us some skills like:

Chest pass

wrap around pass

over head pass

bounce pass 

When you are dribbling the ball keep the palm of your hand off the ball

(keep your hand shaped like a live spider when dribbling)

Keep your head up at all times

keep the ball waist high

dont bounce the ball like a lillypad, pound it.

Clifton taught us warm up activities

At the end of the session we played a game of 10 pass.

We got into two teams. each team needed to pass the ball to its team members 10 times to get a point, while the other team was trying to defend and intercept the passes.

We had to try and use all the new passes we had been taught.

We all enjoyed it!

We cant wait for our next session!

Homework Sharing

Zoe is sharing information about her bird "Pretty boy."

Isabella is sharing information abour her dog Monty

Hadley is sharing about his special friend Lester.

We had a great homework sharing time on Friday. We learnt a lot about what we think is special.

Colour Wheels

This week we have also been learning about Primary and secondary colours. We mixed Primary colours and made secondary colours. 

Maps

 This week we have been learning about N, E, S, and W.
We have been using different maps. We have even started making our own treasure maps.

Triathlon/Duathlon

Last week Room 14 participated in the Triathlon/Duathlon. Some of us completed the team events and some of us completed the individual event. We were very proud of ourselves when we had finished :)
